IBM has been supporting the tradition of volunteer activities developed
by IBM employees and retirees all over the world, and positively assisting
such spontaneous volunteer activities from various aspects. In November
2003, we announced our "On Demand Community," an advanced social
contribution program, in order to enhance our support for volunteer activities
by employees and retirees in the community.

In this program, newly developed on a global scale, if we register as a
volunteer through the in-house intranet site, "On Demand Community,"
we will be able to use valuable solutions, tools, information, etc. on-line,
which are prepared based on achievements through IBM's long support for
the community and social contribution activities in the field of school
education. Participation in "On Demand Community" will make it
possible to provide these solutions without charge to schools or NPOs in
which volunteers conduct their activities.
As part of the "IBM On Demand Community" program, IBM simultaneously
announced the "Community Grants" program, which is the successor,
with improved contents, of the "Fund for Community Service,"
which was introduced by IBM in 1991 and has been utilized. This program
offers funds or donations of IBM products to projects carried out at target
NPOs or schools in which employees and retirees actively conduct volunteer
activities. Moreover, the utilization of tools provided in the "On
Demand Community" will make it possible to increase the amount of
donations of IBM products used to support NPOs and schools.
If "On Demand Community" and "Community Grants" are
utilized together, the fusion of skills and capabilities of IBM employees
and retirees, and IBM's innovative technological capabilities will be available,
and the community will enjoy benefits through this new model of volunteer
activities making full use of all of such advantages.
