Overview:
Twenty years have passed since Yamato Laboratory began its operations in 1985. In its early days, Yamato Laboratory was responsible for the development of general-purpose terminals and small information equipment centered on communications products, as well as product assurance for these items. And over the past two decades, the role of the organization has expanded greatly.

Today, located in an urban area close to its clients (Yamato City, Kanagawa Prefecture), Yamato Laboratory is IBM's only research laboratory in the world that covers research and development fields that include everything from software and hardware, and technology products to basic research. During the past few years, Yamato Laboratory has bolstered its R&D support services for clients and worked to transform itself to a center of innovation, raising the banner of innovation and integration.

  • Tokyo Research Laboratory

Systems&Technology
  • Systems Development Laboratory
    As a member of the Systems & Technology Group and a technical support unit for system product business, the Systems Development Laboratory develops various new products and provides technical support for Asia Pacific countries.

  • Engineering & Technology Services
    Based on its design, development, and manufacturing know-how in the areas of hardware, software, and services, Engineering & Technology Services provides consulting, design, development, and testing services. It also offers services, via outsourcing and other methods, that support the product development of clients in a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, distribution, and public works.

    Main products developed and business content:
    System solutions centers, advanced systems, financial solutions, server systems, storage systems, tape systems, and deep computing

  • Strategic Alliance
    This unit is mainly responsible for the OEM of system products from IBM's Systems & Technology Group (STG). It is also responsible for promotion of strategic collaboration with Sony, based on IBM's technologies, and the OEM for STG's technologies and engineering services business that result from such collaboration.

  • Technology Group
    This unit is mainly responsible for the chips. It is also responsible for promotion of PowerPC, strategic collaboration with Apple and Toshiba, based on IBM's technologies, and the OEM for IBM technologies and engineering services business that result from such collaboration.

Services
  • Value Solutions
    Yamato Lab. Value Solutions contributes to the success of IBM's business and clients by developing and providing solutions that meet client requests in a valuable manner that is unique to Yamato Laboratory.
    As a pivotal organization for Yamato Laboratory's services business, Yamato Lab. Solutions Development engages in collaboration with various business units to develop and provide solutions. It also integrates such solutions to provide a higher level of value to clients.

  • DCE Innovation Services
    DCE Innovation Services provides services related to the total product lifecycle, including consulting, engineering, development and manufacturing, and maintenance, centering on the support of solutions for embedded equipment for digital consumer electronics.

  • System Technical Service Center
    The System Technical Service Center provides fee-based value-added services and basic services, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, centering on software support services for clients. A total of 350 specialists respond to clients' requests for advice on systems in general and various software programs from a client-based viewpoint. The center receives over 11,000 such requests each month. Also, in terms of indices of service quality, the center has obtained world-class scores. Based in the Toyosu Office, the center offers services through its offices in Makuhari, Hakozaki, Osaka Shinanobashi, and Nagoya.

Operations
  • Solutions Sales
    Yamato Lab. Solutions Sales is responsible for the overall sales of solutions and services provided by Yamato Laboratory and it develops services and other offerings from a client-based viewpoint as well as providing the one-stop shopping opportunity for the purchase of Yamato Laboratory's value-added solutions. This unit is also responsible for IPD consulting services, DCE business promotion, PvC business development, PvC SW sales, etc.

  • Technical & Operations
    This unit supports the entire operations of Yamato Laboratory, through business, human resources, communications, technical promotion, facility environments, ISEL, standards and product safety, the UE design center, etc.

  • Strategy & Global Innovation Center
    The Strategy & Global Innovation Center is made up of the Social Innovation Initiative, which is mainly engaged in the joint research project between the Tokyo Research Laboratory (TRL) and external research organizations, and the Accessibility Center. Through its research activities, the center is involved social issues raised by the Global Innovation Outlook (GIO) and other entities.
    Established in 2005 to make effective use of Yamato Laboratory's comprehensive capabilities, the center works with IBM Research to ensure that Japan takes a leadership role and promote worldwide development.
