SPECIAL ISSUE

What sort of models for innovation should Japanese society, organizations, companies and individuals be pursuing with the future in mind? A key word in finding the solution to this question is "GIE" (Globally Integrated Enterprise). We have a large number of Japanese clients who have realized business model innovation to emerge as winners on the world stage through unique global management. IBM is also working faster all the time to foster concrete innovation of its own in order to support our clients. In this special edition, we will be providing an opportunity to focus on what GIE means to you, our readers.
It is now exactly one year since the publication of the special feature "Innovation that matters." The contents of last summer's special feature are daily becoming reality, and the pace of innovation is also picking up. The world has now become flat in the sense that it is completely linked.
The slogan used around the time of the 50th anniversary of the founding of IBM Japan Ltd. (hereinafter "IBM Japan") was "Working with Society." While the rapid progress of globalization has created many opportunities for society, organizations, companies and individuals, it has also meant the emergence of a variety of risks. The unchanged rule for organizations and companies is probably that of always having a far-reaching vision and continuing to be an organization that is trusted by society.
Over the next two issues, we will be providing you with special features and feature stories on innovation in different industries. We will be focusing on the numerous measures taken by clients representing their respective industries and on our activities here at IBM, and will be both looking back at history and imagining the future. The strong bonds between IBM Japan and its Japanese clients have brought trans-formations to Japanese society and business over three generations, and have helped realize a large number of "Innovations that matters." Our combined DNA has indeed continued creating innovation. Our representatives for the various industries in which they are involved on a daily basis will be explaining future developments in innovation. We will also be introducing you to both seasoned and up-and-coming professionals in a variety of fields to talk about both historic and recent technology Innovation.
We are reaching our 70th anniversary in this year 2007, from October, IBM Japan will begin our enterprise operation directly linked to Headquarters as part of its new business model so that we are able to contribute to Japanese society and our clients to an even greater extent. IBM throughout the world will be responding to the high expectations of its Japanese clients, who carry out business at an increasing speed in response to the acceleration of globalization, and will be further strengthening and expanding its framework in order to provide solutions and support as your most trusted partner. Great expectations have been placed throughout the world on the "DNA for the Creation of Innovation" that can be provided by our Japanese clients and ourselves.
IBM Japan will be facing the future side by side with its clients, society and all of its partners as a company that constantly looks to find ways to innovate, and that is loved and trusted by all.
Please take the time to enjoy reading the 70th Anniversary Special Edition.
