The Perspectives of this Special Issue
In order to rapidly grasp market changes, and increase customer satisfaction through products and services supplied by business enterprises, the role of IT is increasing daily, and the requirements demanded by the IT infrastructure are only ever growing. Through greater dependence on IT, competitiveness may be greatly strengthened through adopting new IT earlier than competitors. On the other hand, company change is limited by many IT operational issues, and competitiveness may be weakening. Globalization of the marketplace is expected to proceed rapidly in the future. It may happen that one day, a certain business enterprise somewhere on Earth may enter the Japanese market as a powerful competitor, combining ideal resources on a global scale. Even though your own business may only be concerned with the Japanese domestic market, it is always necessary to strengthen your competitiveness on the assumption of competing with business enterprises from around the world. IBM is positioning the "New Enterprise Data Center" as a revolutionary computing vision to support business enterprises which require a built-in change mechanism without worrying about IT issues. The New Enterprise Data Center can help them have the built-in change mechanism required for continuous innovation in terms of IT infrastructure.
With such developments as real time data processing, which is expected to increase even faster in the future, prompt development of opportunity-driven applications that respond to the diversification of customer needs, Web 2.0, which is gaining attention as the new trend in IT, and the use of cloud computing, the "New Enterprise Data Center" aims to establish an IT foundation that offers enough flexibility to respond swiftly and accurately to the needs of business and to pursue high standards of economic effectiveness through the application of a broad range of IT.
In this special issue, after summarizing the transformation requirements demanded by enterprise IT infrastructures, we introduce the types of IT that aim to make this a reality. I would be pleased to think that this journal may serve as a springboard for your own IT infrastructure transformations.
