Roles and Importance of the Existence of R&D in Technology

In Japan, we have a research department and a development department supporting IBM technologies. They are the Yamato Software Development Laboratory (hereinafter referred to as YSL) and the Tokyo Research Laboratory (hereinafter referred to as TRL) established in the IBM Yamato Laboratory.
For the past few years, the emergence of technologies such as Web 2.0 and open source has been dramatically transforming the software development environment. Moreover, there are new software technologies, such as cloud computing and mashup technologies, which are attracting people's attention.
In this issue, we invited Dr. Kazuo Iwano, Director of YSL, and Dr. Hiroshi Maruyama, Director of TRL, to join us to talk about collaborative software development, technologies to help advance and improve the quality of software development, and future trends of software technology.
